GPS's are getting more complex.
The principle of GPS and objective remained the same since the beginning . Now, from being highly specialized devices, GPS’s have left the boundaries of the army to reach into almost any car that is driving on our roads these days .
You now get GPS for cars , hiking GPS , bikers, boats etc. But the most common models by far are car models.
What features will you look for on a auto GPS?
Maps and updates are the heart of a good GPS . In a number of countries, towns and street names get changed every time a new regime comes to power. Believe me you don’t want to set foot in those places without an up-to-date map.
Have you got good eyes? If not, I advise you to stay away from cellular phone GPS’s. These often run on extremely tiny screens. And most of these devices don't come with a mount arm for your car anyway .
Features like POI’s have become common on the newest gadgets. What are they? Well they are what they claim to be: points of interest . That is anything that may be of interest to you in your journey: touristic venues, cinemas, museums, restaurants etc.
I’ve always been quite irritated about the other features that you find on some GPS models: an MP3 player etc. These are features you typically never get to use.
Not only are they present on most of your other gadgets but they seem more kind of a gimmick than anything else.
I mean, I got a picture viewer on both my mobile as well as my digital camera . It’s called, they say, convergence: all your electronic gadgets come with the same built-in features.
I am not going to finish this without mentioning one important aspect. In fact the most important service : the possibility of downloading recent maps. These are not standard : not all manufacturers give out map updates . Thanks to Mapshare technology, Tomtom has come up with free weekly map corrections.
